Black Trousers
Black trousers are the one bottom that can move from smart-casual to near-formal without changing the rest of the outfit. The colour absorbs everything you put on top — bold shirts, rich tones, even prints — and grounds them. The catch is that black demands fit. Baggy black trousers look like a school uniform, slim black trousers look intentional.

Fabric
Cotton or cotton-polyester blend for trousers worn regularly. Pure cotton breathes better in Indian heat but creases more. A 60/40 cotton-poly blend holds its shape through a full day without the stiffness of full polyester.
Durability
Black fades with every wash — more than any other dark colour. Cold wash inside out, skip the tumble dryer, and avoid direct sunlight when drying. Expect colour shift after 20-25 washes; a black dye refresh spray buys another season.
Look for
- flat front with a clean break at the shoe
- reinforced waistband that doesn't curl or fold outward
- belt loops wide enough for a 35mm belt
Avoid
Shiny polyester black trousers — they catch light wrong and read cheap in any setting. Matte fabric only.
Don't wear to
Very casual settings where black reads overdressed. Black trousers next to a basic graphic tee creates a mismatch in formality that's hard to resolve without a third piece.
