Polo Shirt
The polo shirt sits in a specific register - above a t-shirt, below a formal shirt - and that gap is exactly where most Indian men need more options. The collar does the smart-casual lifting without requiring a full button placket. Get the fit right and a polo is one of the most versatile pieces you own; get it wrong and it looks like you came in off a cricket pitch.

Fabric
100% cotton pique is the benchmark - the waffle weave breathes well and holds its structure. Look for 180–220gsm: lighter than that and the collar collapses; heavier and it becomes uncomfortable in Indian summer heat. Avoid polyester performance fabrics — they wick moisture but lose the smart-casual character entirely.
Durability
The collar is the first thing to go - it spreads, curls, or goes floppy with repeated washing. Quality polos have a separate collar piece with light interlining that holds shape for 2-3 years. Always hang-dry; tumble drying destroys the collar faster than anything else.
Look for
- a collar that stands on its own without curling or spreading outward
- 3-button placket — 2-button polos sit too high or too low at the neck
- ribbed cuffs at the sleeve that hold their shape after washing
Avoid
Polos with an embroidered chest logo larger than a thumbnail — it signals sportswear and kills the smart-casual register immediately. Also avoid oversized fits; a polo needs to follow the torso to earn its place above a plain tee.
Don't wear to
Formal meetings, traditional family functions, or weddings — the collar alone does not make a polo formal enough for those settings. A full-button dress shirt is the minimum there.
